Sports is fun. It’s always fun because it can be so rewarding. The stories of Serena Williams or LeBron James — people who made the cool list — are partly why we watch sports, to see athletes mesmerize and dominate to the point where it seems what they’re doing is incredibly boring because the superb becomes the routine. But on the flip side, sports can be frustrating. Individual players not living up to expectations, managers not making the right decisions, and entire organizations and leagues taking steps to alienate fans, even if it’s all done indirectly, for the sake of their personal interest. These stories — the people I’ve deemed the uncool — are important too. They help remind us of why sports can be so terrible sometimes and to think about how things can be better. The following is not by any means a comprehensive list, but who I believe to be the most important uncool stories of the year.

I gotta admit, it hurts to see that last 1 on here again, namely because when push comes to shove Sandusky hasn’t been an active sports figure for more than a decade. But I get why it’s considered a sports story seeing as the AD & the legendary football coach were involved in the institutional aspect.
By contrast, now that it’s mentioned, man, Bill O’Brien made a strong, strong case to be on the 5 Coolest list. Dude had the glare of the college football nation on him, with people fully expecting Penn State to succumb to some level of irrelevance, yet he actually did the opposite and restored a little faith in a fan base and alumni base that was sick. That’s pretty cool.
I agree with you 100% Rev, Bill O’Brien did yeoman’s work in 2012. Hope you guys can hang onto him for a little longer. (Well, unless he goes to the Eagles, then I imagine you’d like that.)

I actually this morning I was on an email exchange with 2 of college roommates discussing if BOB went to the Eagles. Both of them said they’d have trouble rooting for him for abandoning Penn St. after 1 year. I said if I was him I’d do it if the Eagles paid out his buyout.
However, I’d be lying if I said I want this to happen. He just did such a marvelous job at PSU this year that I’d like to see him stick around at least another couple years. I don’t really expect that to happen given how successful he’s been, but I’d be conflicted over it too.
I motion we put a statue of The Rev up on PSU’s campus. Replace the Paterno one.
Definitely have it so The Rev has a beer in his hand.
