Meet Zach Brown: The Seven Foot Center of Two Miamis

I’ve been a fan of VICE sports for the in-depth dialogues they do with some of the most celebrated athletes of today.

Their latest featured story explores the depths about highly touted high school basketball recruit Zach Brown that hails from Miami, Florida. The home of Rick Ross, Dan Le Batard, Big Pink, and the Miami Hurricanes isn't usually a hotbed for uber-talented high school basketball players, but in this case it's pertinent.

Brown, a 7’2 abnormality in the game of basketball is obviously taller than most of his opponents, but he’s a pretty darn good player. Since bursting onto the national scene he has become a noticeable name in high school hoops. As a Top 25 recruit in the 2017 class, he has committed to the UCONN Huskies, and will play under head coach Kevin Ollie, that can show him the ropes before he decides to bolt to the NBA due his years of experience playing in the association.

To call Brown unique is an understatement. Standing at over seven-feet his skillset is raw as expected, but the potential is there. Despite being as tall as he is, he has shown the he has soft hands, touch around the rim, and he appears to have a great feel for the game. From a personal standpoint, he has faced more than what the average person could handle in their lives. Brown was adopted after his mother battled issues with drugs. In the short documentary, it shows that he has maintained a relationship with his family despite being adopted.

With uneasiness looking Brown in the face for most his life, he has maintained his maturity and level-headedness that is rare for someone his age.

The life and basketball expedition has been fascinating for Zach in his lifetime. Many people don't make it out of Overton, one of the roughest neighborhoods in Miami, but that story may be different for the extraordinary seven-footer. Although, he may never become Ralph Sampson or even Roy Hibbert, he is writing his own passage. With his future looking promising after a tumultuous past-life, Brown has already become a success story in the eyes of many.
