Berto Vs. Lopez: Premier Boxing Champions Debuts On Spike This Friday

Some of the most exciting welterweights in boxing return to action this Friday on the second installment on Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions, but this time it's on SpikeTV. Known for it MMA content, SpikeTV is getting into the boxing business, and it's kicking things off with two exciting fights and one well executed documentary.

"Lights Out: Berto vs Lopez" not only follows Andre Berto and Josesito Lopez as they prepare for their fight, but also Shawn Porter and Roberto Garcia. The documentary touches on all the salient events for each fighter: the 2010 Earthquake in Haiti for Berto, the knockout of Victor Oritz for Lopez, the loss to Kell Brook for Porter, and the brutal murder-suicide that took the lives of both Garcia's parents.

It's this last story that especially resonates. Roberto Garcia's personal tragedy and no-frills career will very likely endear him to many and make him an underdog with plenty of fans come fight night. Porter is one of the most gentlemanly pugs in the game, and against almost any fighter in the division his exemplary behavior would have me routing for him. But after "Lights Out", I just can't do it. Garcia has my heart's vote. That said, my money is still with Porter, whose speed will give Garcia trouble for as long as the fight lasts.

If four fighters with action-packed resumes isn't enough to get you to tune in tomorrow, then consider that Spike TV is adding some high tech gadgets to the boxing game that will add a different dimension to the viewing experience. They're adding a live 360-degree camera offering a new vantage point, using a camera mounted on glasses worn by the referee, and equipping fighters with sensors that measure the speed and force of every punch thrown. Boxing isn't a sport that changes easily or quickly. Even small innovations like these are exciting. Add them onto two guaranteed action fights, and you've got can't miss TV.

TSFJ will be there live to cover the action, but let us know who you're picking on Friday night. Garcia or Porter? Berto or Lopez? Let us know in the comments section!
