Formula 1 | Drama in Italy; Verstappen Leads Driver Standings

The 2021 F1 calendar has had plenty of action-packed racing, and there’s still seven race weekends between now and the final race – the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix! There has been drama, controversy, and impressive driving displays ever since the first race in Bahrain.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton are the two in the fight for the 2021 World Championship. It’s been exciting for the majority of F1 fans, and it’s likely that there will be much more entertainment before the 2021 calendar is over. Here’s our F1 2021 update!

Italian Grand Prix – Drama at Monza

In the latest F1 race, at the Italian GP, the result was highly-influenced by the crash involving Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. In the early phases of the race, both drivers were battling for the top positions on the grid.

However, on lap 26 of the race, the Red Bull youngster attempted an overtake on Hamilton, who was in second after McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo was leading at this stage of the race. Verstappen was launched into the air, landing on top of the Mercedes car. Both were out of the race, meaning that the race was up for grabs.

Ricciardo held on for the win, whilst his McLaren teammate Lando Norris took second, with the manufacturer getting a 1-2 finish for the first time this year. Valtteri Bottas finished in third, claiming the last podium finish.

Driver Standings

After 14 races, out of a total 21, we are officially two thirds of the way through the F1 2021 calendar. As it stands, it’s Red Bull’s Verstappen that leads the grid on 226.5 points, five ahead of rival Lewis Hamilton. The two front runners are ahead of the pack, and it’s extremely likely that it will be one of the two that wins the 2021 F1 World Championship. With that said, only time will tell which driver that is.

After an impressive 1-2 placement from McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo & Lando Norris, they have taken some significant points to work their way up the standings. Norris is now fourth, only nine points behind a podium place. Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas is currently holding on to third place.

Not far behind is the Ferrari duo of Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc, before Daniel Ricciardo’s jump to 8th spot after his latest victory. It will certainly be an interesting battle, seeing who will become the best of the rest, and get their feet on the final podium spot.

Up Next – Russian Grand Prix

Next weekend, the drivers and teams will be heading to Russia for the Russian GP. Held at the Sochi Autodrom, September 26 will see drivers take to the grid once more to battle it out for points, and that all important win. Verstappen and Hamilton will lock horns again as we enter the final third of the F1 calendar. There will be plenty of eyes on the racing action, and there will no doubt be very exciting to watch.
