Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders | A Super-Middleweight Battle

Arguably the biggest super-middleweight boxing fight in the history of the sport takes place this weekend. You DO NOT want to miss this.

This is the fight everyone has been waiting for in the super-middleweight division. The highly-anticipated bout between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders is set for Saturday night, in front of a packed crowd.

That’s right – up to 70,000 boxing fans will be in attendance at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It will be the largest recorded crowd since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic back in March 2020.

Canelo vs. Saunders: The History

Canelo Alvarez is widely considered as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer that is currently active. As well as that, he’s definitely in the conversation for one of the greatest of all-time. Canelo has fought 58 times, with 55 wins and two draws to his record. His only loss? A majority decision loss to Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather.

Meanwhile, British super-middleweight Saunders is definitely regarded as a ‘Marmite’ person – people either love him or hate him. During his professional boxing career, Saunders has attracted some significantly negative publicity over the years. However, he still boasts a perfect pro record – 30 fights & 30 wins.

Canelo currently holds the WBA and WBC super-middleweight titles, whilst his opponent, Saunders, is the WBO super-middleweight champion. All three titles will be on the line on Saturday night! Whoever wins will definitely be looking for that one remaining title (IBF) to unify the division.

Canelo vs. Saunders - Who Wins?

This incredible clash is going to be one for the ages. There are arguments for either boxer to win on Saturday night – we’ll just have to wait and see what Saturday’s fight brings.

Both boxers are, of course, confident heading into the bout. The Brit spoke out in an interview, saying: “This will be the biggest upset in boxing history, I believe. Certainly in the last 20 years. I believe this is meant to be.

“To win this means absolutely everything to me. More than money, more than fame, more than everything. I want to win this so badly it’s a joke”.

Meanwhile, Canelo – a four-weight world champion - is looking to write his name in the history books: “To win all of these titles at 168lbs…no Mexican has ever done it. I want to make history”.

Elsewhere in the boxing world, some notable figures have made their predictions heading into the highly-anticipated fight. ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson believes Saunders “is already knocked out”, and continued: “He’s knocked out right now. I swear, he’s knocked out”.

In contrast, current WBC world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has predicted a Saunders win over Canelo. In a post on social media, Fury wrote: “Saunders is 100% mentally in the right place. He knows what he has to do and he will do it. He will rise up and claim greatness”.
