British heavyweight and current WBC world champion Tyson Fury has said that a fight with fellow Brit Anthony Joshua is “nowhere near” being finalized.
Fury has spoken out just days after his promoter, Bob Arum, came out and announced that “all the points” leading to the heavyweight bout had been agreed.
However, the Gypsy King does not think this is the case, and has stopped training as a result. The heavyweight bout would be the first time all four belts will be on the line.
Fury: “We’re nowhere near at the moment”
Even though nearly everyone is anticipating the heavyweight unification bout with Fury and AJ, Tyson Fury is clearly one of the very few that isn’t.
In an interview with iFL TV, Fury said: “Until I’ve got a date and a load of money in my pocket, there’s no fight.
“There’s a lot of things that are going on that people don’t know about behind the scenes that can scupper a fight. We’re nowhere near at the moment”.
A fight between the two is inevitable, though, and right now it is closer than it ever has been before. Fury added: “Do I think the fight will eventually happen sooner or later? Yes, it has to happen.
“But do I think it’s imminent? No. I am not going to hold my breath for it. I’ve stopped training now, I’m on holiday”.
Could we see the Fury/Wilder trilogy this year?
The last time Fury fought was February 2020, where he dethroned Deontay Wilder and became the new WBC heavyweight champion. In the interview, the Gypsy King discussed a potential bout with Wilder.
“Don’t write Wilder out the equation, I could be having the trilogy fight with him yet. There is a lot going on behind the scenes and Wilder could be next”.
The Fury camp looks to be keeping their options open, with a couple of fights on the table for the heavyweight.
Fury won’t fight in the UK again
When asked about where Fury intends on boxing, the British boxer was quick to dismiss the UK as a host.
Fury replied to the question, and said: “I will never box here again. No. Finished. The superstar of world boxing will not box in small halls anymore.
“My new home is in Las Vegas. I’ve had my last three fights over there. I intend to stay there and end my career over there”.
Only time will tell what’s next for boxing’s heavyweight division, with fans eagerly awaiting some form of confirmed news.
