Now two games into the 2021 season, the MLS is in full swing, and has had a very exciting start for soccer fans.
With a new schedule, and a brand new team joining the league, there was a lot of anticipation heading into the new season.
If the first two weeks are anything to go by, then it’s safe to say that the 2021 MLS season is going to be a fun one.
Opening Weekend
A lot went on in the first weekend of the new MLS season, and there were a number of talking points in some key fixtures.
In a rematch of the 2020 Western Conference final, Seattle Sounders hosted Minnesota United, but it wasn’t as close as last time. Seattle still came away victorious, but it was much more convincing this time around, with a 4-0 home win.
Elsewhere, new MLS club Austin made their league debut as they travelled to Los Angeles to play LAFC. Unfortunately, it was an opener forget, as the brand new team lost 2-0 in their first taste of MLS football.
In a high-scoring affair, Phil Neville at Inter Miami suffered his first defeat as manager, losing 3-2 to LA Galaxy. New York Red Bulls lost at home to Sporting Kansas, while D.C. United came out victorious in their opening game – winning 2-1 against New York City.
Two Games In: Who’s Leading the Way?
Of course, it’s still very early on, but the season is shaping up interestingly. There have been a number of major fixtures already, with some interesting results in the early stages of the season. Surprisingly, even though there’s only been two games, there’s just one team that currently has a 100% record.
Eastern Conference
Only two games in, there’s only three of the 14 teams in the Eastern Conference remain unbeaten. CF Montreal, Atlanta United & New England Revolution are leading the way in the east, both with one win and one draw to their name.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the conference, New York Red Bulls have struggled in their opening two games, and are yet to secure a point. Only one point ahead, there are five teams all level sitting just outside of the play-off positions.
Again, there’s a long season ahead, and we’re almost certain there’s going to be a major shake-up to the standings between now and the end of the season.
Western Conference
On the other side of the US, it’s LA Galaxy as the only MLS side still with a 100% record – something no other club has been able to achieve after just two games. After a convincing opening win, Seattle Sounders join LAFC, Sporting Kansas & Vancouver Whitecaps on four points just behind the leaders.
Towards the bottom of the conference, it’s Minnesota United – the side on the receiving end of the 4-0 loss to Seattle – who find themselves also without a single point, much like the New York Red Bulls in the east. Both Colorado & Dallas are just one point ahead, and will look to turn around their poor start to the season.
