When people think of the best hip-hop duos, typically groups such as OutKast, Mobb Deep, or Eric B. & Rakim come to mind. However, there are other times when solo MCs come together to give fans a magical collaboration. Rick Ross and Drake are no strangers to tag-teaming like the Mega Powers over the years, with classics ranging from 6 God's "Lord Knows" to Rozay's "Aston Martin Music." The two rappers are back at it again for Ross' latest track, "Gold Roses."
Just two years after releasing his previous album Rather You Than Me, Rozay is preparing to release his tenth album Port of Miami 2 in August. "Gold Roses" is the album's official single Ross has released following teasers with Swizz Beatz and Wale. In typical Ross and Drake fashion, the single finds the two trading verses while the 6 God naturally adds an R&B hook.
Both rappers have been in the music game for over a decade, it makes sense how the two have collaborated on tracks more than a dozen times throughout their respected careers. "Gold Roses" holds a special message for entertainers of their statures. People are often given praises and respect after they're long gone, however, Ross and Drake state the importance of showing love while folks are still around. On the hook, Drake says:
"You made me this way / Before I'm gone outta this place, yeah / Put some flowers in my face, won't you? / Let me know that I did okay, yeah / Don't wait 'til some other day, no no / They love to wait 'til it's too late, it's too late"
Drake and Ross simply want to be around to smell their roses, and rightfully so. Ross' new album is not only a sequel to his 2006 debut Port of Miami, but also a thank-you to his fans that have been supporting him since the beginning.
If the summer calls for a smooth hip-hop track, grab your latest threads and colorful compression socks, and vibe out to "Gold Roses." (Editors note: Remember the days when we were guaranteed a summertime album from Dom Kennedy and he'd drop a track like "Gold Alpinas"? No, just me? Okay thanks.)
