Remember that 37-point game when then rookie Allen Iverson performed that crazy, ankle breaking crossover on Michael Jordan? Yeah, we all do. “Will Allen Iverson end up being the next Jordan?” was the question on every reporter and NBA analysts mind. The guy was accidentally a role model in ways similar to Charles Barkley and a hood favorite.
These same qualities were found in his signature sneaker line. The signature “toe cap” on the Reebok Question made it recognizable to even my grandma. It was also a very simple and wearable shoe, coming in multiple team colors and cuts. While Reebok had key players covering multiple sports (i.e., Frank “Big Hurt” Thomas, Shaq, ‘Nique, Michael Chang, etc.), it was starting to lose the “it” factor to Nike. That’s when DMX emerged as the “moving air” technology. If you had a pair back in ’97, you know exactly what I mean when I say these were the shit.
After a 16-year hiatus, the Reebok Answer is back.
Unlike its predecessor, the Answer was anything but simple. Sporting the brand new “I3” logo on the lateral heel of each shoe, it was clear that Reebok wanted to make a statement. The outsole sported a 10-pod DMX moving air system that shifted air to your pressure points as you moved. A long stripe flowing down the lateral side served as a partition to the premium leather upper and the carbon fiber heel counter. The final detail represented Allen Iverson with his last name descending on the tongue, splitting the traditional Reebok logo on the eye stays.
Reebok will drop this classic from its vault on Friday, May 24, in major Reebok retailers. Will you be adding these to your collection?
