This weekend, the former British heavyweight champion makes his return to the boxing ring. At age 40, David Haye will have his 33rd professional fight, and will be in the ring for the first time since 2018.
Brazilian heavyweight Vitor Belfort will go up against boxing legend Evander Holyfield, after Oscar De La Hoya withdrew from the main event due to Covid-19. However, that’s not the only exciting fight on Saturday night – David Haye will fight Joe Fournier as part of the undercard.
The Event
On Saturday 11, Triller are holding their boxing event at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Florida. After a recent change in the main event of the night, former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort will now face off in the boxing ring against hall of famer Evander Holyfield.
Now 58 years old, Holyfield will lace up the gloves one more time – the first time in a decade, following his last bout in 2011. With an impressive 44-10-2 pro boxing record, Holyfield stepped in to replace De La Hoya. Meanwhile, Belfort has a 26-14-0 MMA record, and was UFC champion all the way back in 2004.
Now, after leaving the UFC, and then his time in Bellator MMA, Belfort has seemingly left the octagon for good. Instead, he has turned his attention to the ring, and will fight in his second professional bout. However, with that said, his only boxing bout so far was back in 2006.
Haye Vows to ‘Annihilate’ Fournier
As part of the undercard, David Haye will also be making a return to the ring, fighting former sparring partner Joe Fournier in Florida. In an interview as part of the build up to the clash, Haye discussed his past relationship with his upcoming opponent.
Haye revealed that Fournier had told him “If we were to fight right now, I would win”, and after some discussions, he agreed to fight in a professional setting. He continued: “I said ‘you’ll get annihilated with 10oz gloves on. No way” and the reply from Fournier was “No, no, no – let’s do it”.
Fournier Unbeaten in Nine
After making his professional debut in 2015, Joe Fournier has gone undefeated in his pro boxing career. However, now Fournier arguably faces his toughest challenge yet in the upcoming clash with the Hayemaker. Who will win this Saturday?
